Columbia University offers a wide range of training programs in the general area of Computational Biology, dispersed over several different departments. In the past few years many of these programs have been unified and consolidated through the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (C2B2). C2B2 brings together two campuses and a large number of departments.
To achieve it's training objectives, the MAGNet Center expands and improves the existing infrastructure to assist in the integration of the tools being developed in the MAGNet Center at all levels of our educational programs. Specific goals of the MAGNet's training plan include:
Developing and expanding graduate training in Computational Biology at Columbia
: This includes enhancements and extensions of the current C2B2 graduate program, improved integration of courses, and working with various departments to establish appropriate tracks in their programs.Facilitating the interdisciplinary training of postdoctoral scientists
: Our plans include creating a training environment for postdoctoral scientists that is similar to that offered to graduate students. Our specific focus is on facilitating the process through which postdoctoral fellows from diverse disciplines develop into computational biologists.Training bench biologists, both in academia and industry in the methods of Computational Biology
: This involves courses, workshops and on-line tutorials. geWorkbench, the MAGNet bioinformatics software platform, is used extensively in this regard.
